Solution
HackTribe designed and executed "LifeHack Valmiera," an open innovation hackathon bringing together a diverse international group of experts to tackle six specific urban challenges. This program generated a wide array of nature-based and technological solutions, assessed by a jury of municipal, academic, and governmental leaders.

Driving Urban Innovation for Valmiera's Future
Valmiera, a vibrant city in Latvia, encountered significant environmental and ecological hurdles common to many growing urban centers. These included critical issues such as mitigating urban heat island effects, managing flood risks, and improving water quality within specific areas of the city. Recognizing the need for innovative and diverse perspectives to address these complex problems, the Valmiera Municipality sought an external partner to orchestrate a focused, outcome-driven initiative.
The municipality understood that traditional approaches might not suffice for challenges set to escalate with future urban development and climate changes. They required a platform that could attract a broad spectrum of expert talent, generate actionable solutions, and foster international collaboration. Their goal was to not only find answers to immediate concerns but also to establish a pipeline for future urban resilience and sustainable development strategies.
HackTribe's Open Innovation Framework
HackTribe partnered with the Valmiera Municipality to design and implement "LifeHack Valmiera," an intensive open innovation hackathon. This program was meticulously structured to channel multidisciplinary expertise toward six distinct, high-priority urban challenges identified by the city. These challenges encompassed diverse geographical areas and issues, including:
- The Gaide River
- The Rāte River
- The area near Matīši highway and the "DEPO" store
- The Valmiera Olympic Center parking lot
- The left bank of the Gauja River
- The Valmiera Industrial Park territory
The hackathon attracted over 80 participants from six countries, comprising students, technology experts, urban planners, environmental scientists, architects, and engineers. To ensure pragmatic and contextually relevant solutions, HackTribe facilitated access to 30 expert mentors. These mentors included local specialists from the Valmiera Municipality, offering invaluable insights into local conditions, alongside field experts from both the private sector and research institutions. This blend of local knowledge and broad industry expertise was crucial for developing well-rounded and implementable ideas.
Groundbreaking Solutions and Impact
The "LifeHack Valmiera" hackathon concluded with the presentation of numerous innovative solutions, rigorously evaluated by a distinguished jury. The jury comprised representatives from the Valmiera Municipality, researchers from Riga Technical University and Tallinn University of Technology, and a representative from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development. This diverse jury ensured a comprehensive assessment of each proposal's feasibility, impact, and innovation.
The top three winning teams demonstrated exceptional creativity and practical application:
- 1st Place: "Potato Olympics" (Estonia) - Awarded the main prize of 2,500 EUR for their comprehensive nature-based solution to mitigate the urban heat island effect at the Valmiera Olympic Center parking lot. Their proposal included green roofs and walls, strategic tree planting, rainwater harvesting, and integrated green pedestrian pathways. The jury particularly commended the modularity of their solutions, allowing for phased implementation.
- 2nd Place: "Team Water" (Estonia) - Presented nature-based solutions for climate adaptation, education, and recreation along the Gauja River promenade, focusing on enhancing public engagement and ecological resilience.
- 3rd Place: "RāVal team" (Latvija) - Proposed innovative sensor technologies combined with nature-based solutions to address water quality issues in the Rāte River, integrating educational elements and recreational opportunities.
The success of the hackathon underscored the power of open innovation in tackling complex urban challenges. The Valmiera Municipality gained a portfolio of actionable ideas, validated by experts, to enhance its urban environment and ecological sustainability for the benefit of its residents.
