Driving Global Fintech Innovation with Open FinHack

In an increasingly dynamic financial landscape, the need for continuous innovation is paramount. HackTribe partnered with Open FinHack to orchestrate a global open innovation hackathon, bringing together a diverse pool of talent to address pressing challenges and identify groundbreaking solutions in the fintech sector. The initiative sought to scout for both B2B and B2C innovations, encompassing a broad spectrum of financial services.

A Worldwide Search for Transformative Ideas

The Open FinHack challenge resonated globally, attracting a remarkable 231 participants from 38 countries. This international outreach ensured a rich diversity of perspectives and expertise, crucial for fostering truly innovative outcomes. Participants were tasked with developing solutions across six vital areas of the financial industry:

  • Crowdfunding
  • Fraud detection and prevention
  • Blockchain solutions
  • Data analytics
  • Personalized financial services
  • Financial literacy

The hackathon was meticulously designed to be inclusive, welcoming individual idea generators, expert contributors, and early-stage startups alike. This open approach encouraged a wide array of innovative concepts to emerge and be refined.

Intensive Development and Expert Mentorship

Over the course of nearly a week, 23 finalist teams engaged in an intensive development sprint. Working both in-person and remotely, these teams dedicated themselves to transforming their initial concepts into viable prototypes and business models. To support their efforts, HackTribe mobilized an extensive network of 48 experts from various fields and countries. These mentors provided invaluable guidance, helping participants hone their ideas, navigate technical complexities, and develop robust go-to-market strategies.

The final evaluation by an international jury was comprehensive, assessing several key criteria:

  1. Concept and creativity of the idea
  2. Design and potential user experience
  3. Business model viability
  4. Team cohesion and capability
  5. Realization potential and impact

This rigorous assessment ensured that only the most promising and well-developed solutions were recognized.

Pioneering Solutions and Lasting Impact

The hackathon culminated in the recognition of several outstanding teams, showcasing the potential for significant disruption within the financial industry. The Latvian team “Frankey” emerged as the winner, presenting a compelling platform designed to democratize franchise investing. Their innovative approach aims to connect franchisors, franchisees, and potential investors, making business ownership more accessible. Reflecting on their victory, Āris Brencis, co-founder of Frankey, noted, “I had had this idea for two years but hadn't done anything with it. I thought this was a good time to figure out whether to let the idea go or do something about it finally.” Frankey also received legal consultations from “drill.” worth 1000 euros and invitations to the “Riga Comm 2024” conference.

Other notable solutions included “AYMA,” which secured second place with their plan for a neo-bank tailored for the gaming industry, and “Relocate,” which earned third place for its platform assisting immigrants with financial integration in new countries. The “Alphanome.ai” team, an early-stage finance-focused AI research lab, received a sympathy award from “Gravity Team” for their work on AI-generated videos for the financial sector.

"It's also a pleasure that by supporting this hackathon, “DelfinGroup” may have helped someone realise their idea and also made a contribution to the Latvian financial technology industry."
